5 months

Little man is 5 months old
  • He started sitting up on his own at the beginning of this month, he hasn't fully mastered it but he's getting stronger.
  • His little giggles are the cutest thing. He's started "talking" alot more, sounds like he's having a serious conversation with us. It even sounded like he said "da-da", I was really hoping "mama" would be his first word.
  • He likes to be surprised, he will giggle like crazy when you "boo" and pop into his vision
  • Liam got to see santa for the first time, I am so excited for his first Christmas.
  • He has been such a good sleeper lately, we started only rocking him for a minute or 2 and then putting him down awake so he can learn to go to sleep on his own. He has done surprisingly great and hardly cries or fusses when we put him down. Whew, complete opposite of Avery.
  • He started rolling over this month, on 12/11 he rolled from his tummy to back 3 times! of course when we pulled out the video camera he just fussed but wouldn't roll. But I did get a video on my phone. What would I do without my camera phone? :)
  • Liam loves to look in the mirror, he smiles and coos
  • He has started grabbing for things and is very interested when we eat, imagine that!
  • He is wearing mostly 6-9 and 9 months clothes now, everything else is too small.
  • He also wears size 4 diapers at night (the same size Avery wears during the day)
  • Liam has gotten much better hand-eye coordination. He loves to hang onto things, especially a burp cloth or his octopus and bring it to his mouth.
  • He has changed so much and is such a joy to our family. I just love this little guy more and more everyday.
Happy 5 month birthday Liam!

happy 5 months Liam

Today Liam is 5 months old. I can't tell you how fast these past few months have flown by. I wish this was his 5mo post but unfortunately I am in the hospital and unable to post his pics. I will get the post up soon after I get home. As to why I'm in the hospital; Last week 12/12 I had an outpatient surgery that I developed an infection from. Yesterday I was admitted in the hopes of another surgery that evening but it ended up being pushed to this morning. My doctor basically went in to take a look and flush the area. I did have an infected area and I'm praying that she was able to clean it and that all the swelling will go down. I've been on alot of antibiotics. Of course this is probably the worst time of year to be in the hospital. I haven't gotten to talk to my doctor since before surgery but she told my mom that "hopefully" I will be able to go home before the holidays. :( I'm trying not to get my hopes up. Kinda feels like when Liam was in the hospital, the unknown. I do thank God that its me in the hospital and not either of my kiddos. Our family has seen entirely too much of Baylor hospital this year. I will have to have one more surgery to re-stitch the area in the future once the infection is completely gone. Ugh, this has not been a fun week and a half. I can't wait to get back home with my babies, this week has been rough on my little Avery Jo. She's been asking about mommy and saying "is mommy getting better?". I know its hard on her that I can't pick her up, get down and play with her and overall be there like normal.
** update; I did get released on Christmas Eve and was able to spend Christmas with the Rhodes family and see Avery's face Christmas morning when Santa had arrived. She was very excited. I'm still working on trying to heal, it may be a long process, I'd appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers!**

Rolling rolling rolling.....

Yesterday Liam mastered rolling over from his tummy to back. He did it several times yesterday and today. Even at 6am this morning he decided to talk to himself and attempt his new trick. Hopefully this early waking won't last too long. Here is a video I captured of him rolling, this was his 2nd of 3 rolls that afternoon;
Love my little chunk! he's growing up too fast though

4 month check up

Liam had his 4 month well baby visit this past week. His doc says he looks great! He weighed in at 17.2lbs (93rd percentile) and was 25 inches long (70th percentile)! He's definitely getting enough to eat :). His doc said we'll keep him on his reflux meds while he's still spitting up alot, re-evaluate him around 6 months but he may need to stay on them for a year! He's getting so big.

Pics from Oklahoma

I amVERY behind on posting but here are some pics from our visit to Oklahoma, taken 9/18;
 Great Papa and Liam

 Teagan and Avery
 Mom-mom and Avery
 Papa T and Liam, snoozing
Auntie Cici, Avery and Gigi doing what Ave loves best, reading!
Talk about a charmer!

4 months old

4 months old
  • This smile shows it all, he is one happy little guy!
  • One week after he turned 3 months old I had the nurse weigh him at Avery's 2yr check up, he weighed in at 15lbs 15 oz, Avery was only 14lbs at her 4 month check up! He doesn't go for his 4 month check up till the 30th but I can't wait to see what he weighs now.
  • This little guy still loves interaction. Give him some attention and he will coo and smile for hours.
  • He does the funniest thing before going to sleep, when I would rock him he would start squirming and try to almost root. He would fuss and squrim for about a min or 2 and then he would pass out! Its like it was his last energy release before falling asleep.
  • He had become picky about his pacis, I have 2 pacis for him a giraffe and a monkey. He does not like the monkey even though they are the exact same paci. The animal is attached to the base of his pacifier and just hangs down so he can cuddle with it. He loves the giraffe but hates the monkey. too funny!
  • Just this past week he has decided he likes the Nuk pacifiers. These are the same ones Avery took and alot less creepy looking! When he wakes up at night he takes this paci and goes back to sleep, maybe he'll be a paci baby after all?
  • He found his hands this month and likes to hold both fists straight up (while lying on his back) and stare at them. He swats at the elephant under his jungle gym and will hold and bring toys up to his mouth. He also loves to grab at things(mainly my hair!)
  • He rolled over from his tummy to back another time but hasn't fully mastered the skill.
  • The past week he has started waking at night, he was sleeping great till 6:30-7am, now he's waking once or twice before 6. I'm hoping (praying) its just a phase :) Fortunately, Ave has been good about sleeping till 7 or 8am!
Happy 4 months birthday Liam!

Oct 31, 2011

2 years old

How is it possible my little girl is now 2 years old? Seems like just yesterday we brought her home from the hospital on Halloween day. She has brought such joy and happiness to our lives, we are so blessed. We celebrated her 2nd birthday at the pumpkin patch this year. This past year Avery has changed so much, she has really become her own little person. She says some of the funniest things and makes us laugh so hard. She also has her stinker moments, can throw a fit in a second and lets you know when she doesn't like something. She loves her brother so much and is always right there when he cries to let him know "its ok bubba". I love to watch her interact with him, definitely makes a momma proud. She is curious yet also cautious. She has become a bit shy lately, even around people she is used to. I love to hear what new things she thinks about, her little brain must be going a hundred miles a minute. She has started talking so fast that it comes out alot like gibberish, I think she just has so much to say but can't get it out fast enough! She can sing quite a few songs herself, count to 10, say her alphabet, knows quite a few colors and knows almost all of the days of the week. She definitely has a sweet tooth like me, but I have to limit her amount of sugar because it definitely affects her! She woke up every hour from 11:30pm till 3:30am the night after her birthday party. She had such fun on her birthday. She still loves her books, she will sit for longer books now. Her favorite this week is Fancy Nancy that Gigi and Papa T gave to her for her birthday. At her 2yr well check-up she weighed in at 30lbs and was 35 inches putting her in the 90th and 80th percentiles respectively. We love this little girl so much, she has blessed our lives so much. We are so lucky God chose us to be her parents.
Happy 2nd birthday Avery Jo!
Birthday pics to come :)

3 months old

Liam David is 1/4 of a year old!!

  • This month he rolled over for the first time (10/9) but has yet to do it again!
  • He loves interaction, he smiles and coos
  • He still sleeps great at night, last week he sleeped from 7pm till 7am for 4 days straight! He did it again last night. Amazing for only 3 months old.
  • Liam loves bathtime, he never cries or fusses until I take him out of his tub
  • Surprisingly enough, he hasn't pee'd on anyone in awhile!!
  • I haven't been as scheduled with Liam as I was with Avery but he pretty much puts himself on a good schedule. He eats every 3 hours, usually awake for 1-1.5 hours then takes a nap. I definitely enjoy rocking him to sleep, it never takes long, but I usually rock awhile longer just to enjoy the snuggles!
  • I love what Liam does just before he nurses. He gets very excited, kicks one of his legs like a rabbit and waves his arms around!
  • He loves to chew/eat his fist. Still waiting to see if he finds his thumb but he would rather put his fist in his mouth than his pacifier.
  • He started wearing size 2 diapers about halfway through this last month!! Ave was 4 months old before she was in size 2's! He also wears mostly 3-6 month clothes. BIG BOY!
  • I moved him to his room about a week ago, once he started sleeping 11-12hours a night!
  • Liam has started scooting when he's on his belly. At night I put him in the middle of his bed but by halfway through the night he's scooted all the way so that his head is in the corner of his bed!
  • His legs are really strong, he likes to stand up and can kick pretty hard.
  • This month he became really interested in his activity gym, he smiles and coos while watching the lights. He also loves to look at himself while he's in his swing, there is a mirror just above him and he smiles and coos at himself!
  • He is still on his reflux medication and still gets gas pains sometimes. He has good days and bad days, some days he won't hardly spit up at all and others he spits up ALL day long.
  • This little guy loves to be held. Shoulder is his favorite spot but he also likes to be held in your arms so he can stare up at you. He still falls asleep like that! I soak up every minute I can.
Happy 3 month birthday Liam! We love you so much!

"its ok bubba"

Have I mentioned that Avery loves her brother? Today, Liam didn't want me out of his sight so while I emptied the dishwasher he sat in his bumbo. Of course, Avery wanted to come join in. She scooted his bumbo to her and this was when he started fussing. She tells him "I talk to you" then she says something like "goodness gracious" she likes to mimic right now so you can hear her trying to "talk" like him. She is also fascinated with his eyes. Fortunately, she is good about not touching his eyes. :)

bathtime giggles

Liam loves taking a bath. He always gets the biggest smiles and kicks around in the water. I don't think he's cried since his first bath at home. Tonight was the first time I've heard him giggle. I even caught it on camera;
prepare for utter cuteness!!!

Happy birthday Great Papa!

She did say "Happy birthday Great Papa". I just couldn't get her to say it on camera! Little Stinker! We love you Great Papa! Happy Birthday(yesterday!).
(this was supposed to be up yesterday but I couldn't get the video to upload till today!)

2 month baby chatter

I just love Liam's baby chatter and smiles he's been giving us!

Sep 29, 2011

23 months

23 months old!!!

  • Avery started mothers day out this month. Her first day went great, no tears and she even took a nap. After that day she did tear up when I drop her off but her teacher said it was only for a few minutes. Her teachers have told me she is the most talkative child in her class. She no longer gets upset when I drop her off or they leave her class to go to PE or chapel.
  • She found a new favorite stuffed animal. A dog, she named Ruff Ruff. She carried it around with her at Papa and Gigi's house and had to bring home with her.
  • Avery is still sucking/chewing on her fingers, I'm hoping that once her molars come in she will stop!
  • She has also been showing her "terrible 2's", throwing tantrums and saying no and mine!
  • Avery went pee pee in the potty this month, not really on purpose but maybe we're closer to starting to potty train?
  • She started talking with an inflection, she ends her sentences with a high voice, its hilarious to listen to after awhile!
  • She loves to sing her sleepytime song with us now, twinkle twinkle is still the song of choice!
  • Last week I was flipping through the TV guide and I guess Avery saw a football game in the small box and said "I watch football momma". As funny as it sounds she wanted to watch football and we did. Everytime a commercial came on she would look puzzled and say "football?". Maybe she'll be into sports?
  • She still loooves her brother. She doesn't ask to hold him as often, maybe some of the newness has worn off, but she still loves to talk to him and kiss him. She has been so good around him, careful to not step on him and very gentle with him!
  • Avery got her first BIG boo-boo. She was running down our sloped driveway and tripped and fell onto her face. She skinned up her cheek near her eye and the next day it was bruised around her eye as well. :(. It has healed almost all the way now!
  • Avery got to watch her first movie in the car this month, Chris rigged up his parents' portable DVD player so that Avery could watch "old mcdonalds farm" on our way to Oklahoma. She of course loved it! Kept her occupied for 2 hours!
  • I think it is so cute when Avery can't find me she calls out "Where are you mommy?" her little voice is just so cute!
  • Avery likes to talk about checking her email when she has one of her play phones. Guess that is how her generation will be, they won't know a life without Iphones or the internet!
  • Avery has started sitting still for longer books, her favorite is Corduroy.
  • She has also gotten really interested in puzzles this month.
  • She still loves trains and looks for one everytime she sees train tracks.
  • Ave is getting better at drinking from a normal cup, without a lid!
I can't believe she'll be 2 in just one month!!!

Sep 23, 2011

oh dear!

The other night we were getting ready to take chris to the airport and Avery decided that Liam needed to go see the kitty cat. She grabbed the handle of his carseat and started to drag it behind her! Fortunately he was securely fastened in his carseat otherwise we would've had a very scary moment. Liam didn't seem the least bit unnerved by the experience! I captured it on video... she's too funny!

Sep 22, 2011

2 months old

Liam is 2 months old!!
check out that smile!
(in this pic I actually see some of my dad in that smile!)
  • Liam has become quite the charmer this month, he gives some of the biggest smiles and cutest coos.
  • His gas pains have gotten better and I no longer think it matters what I eat. I tried staying off dairy for almost a month and didn't see a change, I think his digestion system just needs to mature.
  • He did have reflux and his pedi prescribed him medicine that has helped alot. He still has a few days where it flares up but for the most part he doesn't spit up as much or as often and doesn't seem in pain!
  • I still think he may become a thumb sucker, he likes to suck on his fist but hasn't figured out how to put out his thumb yet.
  • I have given in and let him sleep on his tummy. He is so much quieter and sleeps much more peacefully.
  • He still isn't a big fan of the pacifier, but it does sometimes soothe him. He sleeps without it for most of the time.
  • I can hardly believe he's already 2 months old! Today at his doc appt he weighed 12lbs12oz (putting him in the 90th percentile for weight) and was 22.5 inches long (60th percentile). Definitely a little chunk, I looked back and Avery was 11lbs1oz at 2months old! He also got his first shot but only cried till I picked him up, still heartbreaking to watch!
  • He has gotten very strong lifting his head off the ground while on his tummy, he loves to look around and of course watch the ceiling fan.
  • I have to say, this little guy is a great sleeper at night. The past 2 nights he slept from 9pm-5:30am!! His pedi said to let him sleep as long as he wants to at night since babies usually start sleeping through the night when they double their birth weight and he's almost there.
  • His favorite spot is snuggled on someone's chest.
  • Liam still likes his swing but we haven't been using it as much lately since I let him sleep on his tummy. He does tend to get fussy when he is tired and sometimes I just have to hold him tightly and bounce around and he'll go right to sleep.
  • I am definitely not as scheduled with Liam as I was with Avery, I was very strict about her feeding times, waketimes and naptimes. I'm still trying to use the babywise (eat, play, sleep) cycle but the sleep part sometimes ends up in the car on the go! Hopefully as I get more used to 2 kiddos we'll get his schedule on track :)
Happy 2 month birthday Liam!

Liam's NICU journey

I have finally got this post put together, its been awhile in the making! I wanted to get down all the dates and events we went through during Liam's NICU stay so I'll have a place to look back at if we forget anything.
July 22nd, 2011
Liam was born at 10:24am. He was only in the recovery room with me for a little while before they took him to the nursery because his breathing rate seemed fast. Once in the nursery his pediatrician was called and when she was told how fast he was breathing she said to send him to the NICU. Once in the NICU they put him under an oxygen hood and had him on 80% oxygen. We breathe 21% so he was needing quite alot extra.
This was my first time to see him and kiss his cheek
this was my first time to see him later that evening in the NICU, wish it wasn't blurry!
July 24, 2011; Liam was getting chest xrays each day to see if the fluid in his lungs was decreasing. After 2 days and it hadn't gone away and he was still needing so much oxygen the doctors thought maybe he had pneumonia, they started him on IV antibiotics and drew blood cultures. I was told it would take at least 5 days to run the full dose of antibiotics so he would be in the NICU at least another week. Here are our pictures with him from this day;
Our little astronaut!
July 25, 2011; this was the hardest day for us but looking back it was the best day for Liam. The doctors got his blood cultures back and they didn't show any signs of pneumonia or infections. They then concluded that Liam had RDS (Respiratory Distress Syndrome). I walked into the NICU with my friend Nicole expecting to just see him like we had been doing but I instantly noticed the ventilation machine next to his bed. My heart dropped, I asked the nurse if it was for him and she said yes. I broke down, his NICU doctor came over and explained to me that RDS means he was either born without surfactant in his lungs or he used up what little he had breathing so fast when he was born. Either way he needed to be given some and the only way to do that was by sedating and intubating him. Nicole was great, she went to get chris for me and I attempted to explain to him what the doctor had told me. When we got back to my room we both held each other and cried. The doctor came to my room when they had finished giving him the surfactant. It was really hard to see our little guy with the breathing tube, sedated and a little swollen. We couldn't touch him because he had to be kept sterile while the tube was in. They planned to keep him on morphine for at least 24 hours to give his little body a rest. While this was the hardest day for us it was really the turning point for Liam, we finally knew what was wrong with him and how to fix it!

July 27, 2011. What a glorious day this was!!! We walked into the NICU to see the breathing machine gone and only a nasal canula remained!! Praise the Lord. Our little guy's respiratory rate was much lower than before. He had a feeding tube in his nose but this day he got to try a bottle for the first time and he took it like a pro!

"pirate-eye"

July 28, 2011. This may be my favorite day to look back on (besides the day he came home of course!). This was the day I got to hold my son for the first time!!! We had our favorite nurse and she said if he continued to have a good day then she would let me try holding him that evening. I didn't want to get my hopes up but I practically bounced walking into the hospital that evening. It wasn't the easiest thing trying to situate him with all the tubes and wires but I didn't care. He was in my arms and that was all that mattered!! Chris had gotten to hold him in the operating room so he kindly let me have him all to myself.  Of course I didn't want to let him go, I wanted to get up and run away with him :). But, of course I did eventually let him go.
an AMAZING moment!
Chris feeding him a bottle
July 29, 2011. On this day, at one week old, Liam got to try breastfeeding for the first time and was quite a champ! I had been very worried that he wouldn't latch right or ultimately wouldn't be able to breastfeed but my fears were unfounded. Even though he had only ever taken a bottle and we had never had any skin to skin contact he knew I was his momma and he was ready. The only frustration was the NICU rules. According to their rules he had to breastfeed for a full 15 min for it to count and not have to supplement with a bottle. Even Avery never did a full 15 min as a newborn. So on this day he did get a few bottles after I fed him even though I'm pretty sure he didn't need them and he would hardly take any. Chris also got to hold him for the first time since the operating room;

July 30, 2011. This was my 2nd hardest/frustrating day. We had a new nurse and not only was she a stickler about the 15 min rule she also was never around. I came in to feed him and when he didn't eat a "full 15 min" she left to warm up a bottle. She was gone for more than 30 minutes only to come by and say "oops I forgot to turn on the warmer". Liam was completely content and sleeping but she insisted he needed more. Poor Cindy tried to give him a bottle like we were told but of course he wouldn't take more than a few gulps. Then his respiratory rate started to get elevated, I was looking around for the nurse and his doctor came by. When she saw his respiratory rate she said he could no longer bottle feed and they needed to put the tube back down his nose to give him the rest. Ahh talk about frustrated. I knew he wasn't hungry, plus this was more than an hour since I'd fed him so by forcing him to eat now he wouldn't be hungry at his next feeding! We ended up staying while another nurse (his was still nowhere to be found) put the tube in. I should've left for that because he did NOT like it but couldn't bear to leave him after what all had happened. I left the hospital feeling a little defeated. I just wanted to be his mother. In the NICU I wasn't in charge, the nurses and doctors were, that is a hard pill to swallow.
Gramma and Liam
July 30, 2011. On this day they moved Liam to a different part of the NICU room, in a normal bed and out of the isolete. This day Liam also got to be held by each one of his grandparents!!
 Papa Rhodes and Liam
 Gigi and Liam
Papa T and Liam
July 31, 2011. Another amazing day!  The doctors turned Liam's O2 down to a 1 and that evening took him completely off his nasal canula. The moved him to the "step down" room, the room for babies who were close to going home!! We also took our "going home" class that evening.
"milk coma" :) before they took him off his nasal canula.
Aunt Nini came to visit and got to hold him for the first time that night! this was in the Step down room!
Aug 2, 2011. I was secretly hoping that he would get to come home with us that evening but instead we "roomed in". Basically, we checked back into the hospital for the night and took care of Liam without any assistance from nurses etc. We did have to check in(call his nurse) every 3 hrs and let them know how he ate and if he had a wet/dirty diaper. This was our first official night with our little guy and funny as it sounds he slept the best with the TV on. I think he was used to the lights and noises from the NICU. This evening he also got to meet his big sister for the first time. Avery LOVED him! it was the sweetest thing to watch her with him.

first time meeting bubba!
 sweet kisses
Aug 3, 2011. Today we took our little guy HOME!! We left the hospital around noon after his last visit with the NICU doctor and formal release. Chris and I were both very antsy when they took him back to the NICU to be looked over one last time. I just prayed they wouldn't find any reason that he couldn't come home. Our prayers were answered!!!
headed home!! (same blanket Avery came home with)
So happy that our family is COMPLETE! :)

School

Avery had her first day of Mother Day out on Tuesday, September 6. I think I was more nervous than she was. She surprised me and didn't even cry when we left. She even slept during naptime. She didn't eat all of her lunch I packed her but I figured there was too much going on for her to eat! Her "school" is twice a week but if chris is home she probably won't go both days unless she wants to. Here are some pics we took before her first day;
she looks so cute and grown up!
enjoying the cooler weather on the back porch swing!
Can't believe she'll be 2 next month!!!
Her 2nd day of school was a little harder, she did cry when I dropped her off but her teacher said she stopped almost as fast as she started. She also ate all of her lunch that day but only once the teacher fed her, guess she wanted some one-on-one attention! :)

22 months old

Avery Jo is 22 months old today

  • She is such a good big sister. She loves to love on her brother, hold him and help bring things to me.
  • She says "Oh" alot, usually when she starts a sentence or cries out.
  • Her favorite songs to sing are "Cuckoo clock" "ABC's" and "Ring around the rosie"
  • She started saying "mine" and "my turn" this month. sharing is a hard concept for toddlers but she is learning and doing good at it!
  • Avery's favorite toys are her "make-up" and cell phone. She walks around with an empty bare minerals compact and buki brush and loves to "pretend" to put it on her face. She also walks around talking on her phone, she will giggle and say "thats funny".
  • Avery has loved all her time with both sides of grandparents this month while we took care of her brother.
  • Avery did her first somersault, on accident, she was doing her "trick" where she bends over, head on the floor and puts her arms out straight from her sides. She accidentally pushed off with her feet and did a forward roll. She loved it.
  • She is very good at telling you "bless you" if you sneeze, especially her brother. If he sneezes and she's in the other room you'll hear her yell out "bless you bubba"
  • She is obsessed with Elmo, Dora, Minnie Mouse and "old mcdonalds farm" (which is a video of nursery rhymes she got from Auntie Cici and Uncle A)! She has an Elmo book that has lost a few pages, but she still loves it!
  • Avery learned how to jump this month, she can actually jump off the ground!
  • Avery can sing her alphabet and only misses a few letters, she can also count to 10 and spell her name!
  • Her favorite book (this week) is "Not Me" by Nigel McMullen which she calls the "jack book", I'm a little worried though because the book is about an older brother who blames all his mishaps on his little brother!
  • BIG NEWS, yesterday morning when Avery got up she decided she was all done with her pacifiers. She threw them in the trash can and said "bye bye paci". She did great for her nap and last night without them. I am so proud of my big girl. She only used a paci when she slept and I wasn't planning on trying to get rid of them for awhile. She can definitely surprise us!
  • I can't believe my little girl will be 2 years old in just 2 months!!!
Instead of posting pics of Avery from this month I will post pics of both kiddos at the end of each month and make a post of its own. So be watching, I'll try to post a link to those pics in a few days!
